I read 9 books in January, let’s talk about them! Starting with our bookclub picks

Thriller book picks:

1. Twenty Years Later by Charlie Donlea: 3⭐️ I have been absolutely loving Charlie Donlea lately and they have quickly become one of my new favorite thriller authors. This book is the most popular one of his and honesty I was quite disappointed! Not sure if it was the expectations going into it were too high? It had an interesting premise but I felt it to be a little long and dragged out. And I haven’t thought about this book a single time since I finished. Can’t remember any details honestly. I think there are far stronger books by this author. Let me know if you want a list and breakdown of which books I would recommend!

2. The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens: 4⭐️ another solid thriller read! This one actually really stood out to me and will be a thriller I recommend to many people in the future. I also listened to this one on audio and was very well done. It’s very rare I actually CARE about characters in suspense thrillers/horror books. But I loved the representation in this and how much love the brothers had for eachother. I was absolutely hooked from the very beginning and loved how it ended. It can be predictable but it’s still enjoyable nonetheless!

Fantasy pick: The Devils by Joe Abercrombie

Well… this is a SOFTTTTT dnf for me… so I heard the audiobook was amazing so I tried this on audio. Got to like 30% and realized I didn’t know what was happening what’s so ever 🤪I can see why people love the audiobook narrator. I can FEEL the passion and love the voice actor has for his job but I think for me it was too goofy?????? I can’t exactly pin point it because a part of me was having fun with it but the I realized I wasn’t following AT ALL!! So I think this is one I need to read physically. And I was planning on picking it up right away but then I got accepted to read an ARC on NetGalley that I’m VERY EXCITED ABOUT so I got a little distracted and started that instead. Oops. But I will be trying this out soon!!!

Hi everyone happy Monday! I unfortunately did not have a very productive reading week this past week :( I have yet to start out fantasy book pick House of Salt and Sorrows since I am in the middle of the faithful of the fallen series at the moment.

Fthebuffor our Horror book pick of the month The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, I unfortunately DNF'd this at 56% on audio. the audio book was not necessarily bad, I think the writing style is just not for me. I did like how all the POVs had different voice actors so it was easy to keep track that way, however, I was just not engaged with the story at all. I could not hold my focus no matter how hard I tried. the premise sounds very interesting and unique, however, I cannot tell you a single thing that happened in this book and I spent SEVERAL hours trying to understand. This book gets a lot of praise so I am definitely in the minority but the pacing and style of this book is just not for me!

The 11.5 books that I read in December!

Horror book pick: Sleep Tight 1⭐️

I read this at the very beginning of the month and did not enjoy this one AT ALL. It had so many elements that I should have loved but I don’t think it was executed well. It also wasn’t scary at all. I literally couldn’t tell you a single thing that happened in this book even right after I finished it nonetheless NOW. Was very disappointed since I wanted to be able to discuss this with you guys but I literally have nothing more to say about this one :/

Fantasy book pick: Malice 4.5⭐️

• I had an absolute blast with this! Definitely for my seasoned classic fantasy lovers out there! It took me like 40% of the book to actually get used to all the characters and understand where the story is going but wow that last portion of the book was action packed and insane. So many twists and turns. Filled with battles if you’re into that. I immediately jumped into book 2!

October fantasy book pick: Wild Revernece by Rebecca Ross

I gave this one 4.25 stars. I absolutely love Rebecca Ross's writing. so atmospheric and beautiful. I loved the characters ad their love story so so much. This is a prequel to divine rivals duology but i dont think you need to read the original duology before or read this prior! This can totally be read as a standalone.

October horror book pick: Theme Music by T. Marie Vandelly

I gave this book 3 stars. Part of my dissapointment with this book was my assumption that this was going to be absolutely horrifying. This book definitely did have its dark and gory moments, however, THIS IS NOT A HORROR. this is a thriller book through and through. I did wish we had read something more scary and creepy for October... if you go into this with different expectations than I did, then maybee you would enjoy this more

• Long Time Gone by Charlie Donlea: 3.75 stars this is a great mystery/thriller. always solid reads from this author

• The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager: 3 stars this was just okay. Felt dragged out but I like the ending. also felt a bit YA

• Brother by Ania Ahlborn: 4.5 stars WOOWW this book is actually insane I'm obsessed. one of the darkest books Ive ever read

• The Perfect Son by Freida McFadden: 3 stars this was just okay. fun time but not memorable

• Alchemised by Sen Lin Yu: I got to around 350pages with the audio book and the world building was too intricate and detailed to the point where the story wasn't progressing and every sentence was the most descriptive sentence about every little thing and I just could not do it anymore. I Never finished reading the HP series and did not read manacled.The writing wasn't "bad." in fact, it was quite beautiful. just the way the story was being told and the plot not progressing a the pace I wanted it to was disappointing.
